The company was founded by Ingo Stroup, who has been involved in the Building Science industry for over 30 years. He was one of the original participants in establishing ENERGY STAR in Idaho and has a comprehensive understanding of building performance and efficiency measures. The company has grown significantly through the years and is one of the largest rating companies in the Northwest.


Building Energy, Inc. received the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA ENERGY STAR for Homes Leadership in Housing Award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. This national award recognizes the company’s work in promoting energy efficient construction and helping to protect the environment through its partnership with ENERGY STAR. In addition, the company received the 2012 Most Innovative Verifier of the Year award and the 2014 and 2015 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award.

Meet Our Staff 

Ingo_sm Ingo Stroup – President and CEO – RESNET Certified HERS Rater/Provider

Ingo started Building Energy over thirteen years ago and has steadily grown the business into a full-service energy services company. He previously enjoyed a fifteen year career with the State of Idaho as a Senior Energy Specialist for the Department of Water Resources, Energy Division and the Division of Building Safety. He is known as one of the Northwest’s leading experts in building performance and efficiency. Born in Germany, Ingo is particularly fond of German cuisine and libations. He likes to fish in his spare time, is open-water dive certified and an avid traveler, preferring tropical destinations.

IMG_0996 Denice VanDoren – Director of Finance

Denice manages the administrative, HR and financial side of the company. An entrepreneur at heart, she has a strong marketing background and started, then sold, a coffee shop and a newspaper since moving to Idaho in 2000. She was also a licensed Idaho Real Estate Agent for seven years. Walking Maggie, Pilates and reading are things that Denice enjoys.

Brendon attended the University of Idaho and worked for the US Forest Service for six years prior to joining Building Energy. He is the senior employee in our Field Services Division and has been instrumental in coordinating our Energy Modeling and HERS certifications. In his spare time, Brendon likes to camp and hike.

With a degree in Environmental Studies from BSU, Connor has a passion for sustainability and the environment. Connor manages the QA and AXIS components of the organization as well as performing field testing and inspections. Along with caring for our planet, Connor enjoys bicycling, camping and reading comic books.

Christine Smith – Building Science Data Analyst

Christine recently graduated from Boise State University with a degree in Environmental Studies and Geospatial Information Analysis. She is learning the data analysis portion of the business in addition to researching additional areas of interest to the company. She is also a member of the Idaho Army National Guard. Christine enjoys spending time with her daughter and other hobbies include running and outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and camping.

Maggie is a West Highland Terrier. Her responsibilities include greeting visitors to our office, politely begging when there is food around and sleeping a lot.

Multi-Family Testing

Building Energy has the staff, equipment and experience to test and verify Multi-Family projects. We provide independent energy code testing as required by the 2009 IECC and also certify ENERGY STAR/Green projects for utility incentive programs and Tax Credits... (read more)
